The Ministry of the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:31-44)

Part of the Spiritual Growth series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

The Holy Spirit in action is seen in the lives of various faithful people connected with the births of John the Baptist and Jesus.

Luke 1:35 - And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.

Luke 1:41 - And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

Luke 1:67 - And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

Luke 2:25-27 - Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,
THE HOLY SPIRIT ENABLES JESUS TO FULFILL HIS MINISTRY

Luke 3:22 - and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.

Luke 4:1 - And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness

Luke 4:14 - And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country.

Luke 4:18 - “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed

John 3:34-35 - For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.
THE HOLY SPIRIT THROUGH PRAYER EFFECTS THE MINISTRY OF JESUS

Luke 6:12 - In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.

Luke 9:18 - Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”

Luke 9:28 - Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray.

THE HOLY SPIRIT SPREADS JOY, BOTH TO JESUS AND THE BELIEVERS

Luke 10:17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”

Luke 10:21 - In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

Luke 24:52-53 - And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.

Have you ever thought that a person is too far God to help?
Have you ever seen a situation that looks utterly hopeless?
This is where the ministry of the Holy Spirit is essential.

In Titus 1:12 we are told the character of a group of people who live on the island of Crete. There is a rather outrageous statement made about them by one of their own. Verse 12 says, “One of them, a prophet of their own, said, ‘Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.’”

Paul reaffirms this statement of that Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons by writing in verse 13-16: This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
Paul knows from his own pridefully religious background that no one is righteous before God, not one. So, in Titus 3:3-6 Paul writes, “For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
