Jesus Our Savior (Acts 10:38)

Jesus our Savior
What did Jesus come to do?
Of course, ultimate work of Jesus is being our substitute upon the cross, but I want to focus on the earthly ministry of Jesus as Savior.
1 John 4:14 - We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.
The Bible term “to save” is salvation in regards to 1. material and temporal deliverance from danger, suffering and sickness; and 2. the spiritual and eternal salvation granted immediately by God to those who believe on Christ.
It includes the present power to deliver and the future deliverance of believers at the second coming of Christ.
Luke 19:10 - For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.
JESUS CAME TO SEEK AND SAVE THE LOST
Acts 10:38 - how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
LET’S SEE JESUS IN ACTION
MARY MAGDALENE
Jesus delivered Mary Magdalene from seven demons.
Luke 8:2 - and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out.
We are not told what the demons were but it could be a combination of several possibilities.
She could have an unclean spirit, which enters by means of some kind of sexual encounter outside of marriage. She could have had a spirit of shame. That would make sense. Maybe even a spirit of self-hatred or self-loathing and maybe even a spirit of abandonment or isolation. That’s only four. Maybe she was bound with a spirit of bitterness, which helped the others stay put. Maybe she had a spirit of rejection, and possibly a spirit of fear, which is quite common. Who knows?
John 20:17 - Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
HERE WE SEE BOTH
THE TEMPORAL DELIVERANCE
AND THE ETERNAL SALVATION
Mary Magdalene gives us hope that if we are tormented by the devil, even today Jesus extends his power to free us.
Many today need deliverance from bitterness, rejection, fear, abandonment, self-hatred, oppression, depression, unclean spirits, and other harassments of hell.
JESUS OUR SAVIOR CAME TO SEEK AND SAVE THE LOST
THE WOMAN AT THE WELL
Jesus healed the broken heart of the woman at the well.
She had been through multiple relationships looking for love and being disappointed in her search. Please read John chapter 4.
Isaiah 61:1b - He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners
Psalm 34:18 - The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
THE REASON SHE WAS AT THE WELL ALONE IS BECAUSE SHE WAS REJECTED BY THE TOWN FOR HER MULTIPLE FAILED MARRIAGES. JESUS REVEALS HER HEART AND TOUCHES HER SOUL DEEPLY BY PURELY, LOVINGLY ACCEPTING HER AND SPEAKING INTO HER LIFE. HER BROKEN HEART IS HEALED ON THE SPOT.
John 4:39 - Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”
A TESTIMONY GET SOMEONE’S ATTENTION, BUT THEY NEED TO EXPERIENCE THE LORD FOR THEMSELVES.
John 4:42 - They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
Here’s what I know about Jesus. He knows the precise moment and place that your heart was broken; and more than that – HE FELT IT BREAK.
Jesus frees the woman caught in adultery.
The woman who had been caught in adultery walked away with a freedom that no man could ever give her. Her testimony of the Scriptures gives great hope to those who feel overcome by their failures.
John 8:7 - And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”
John 8:10-11 - Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
Partnering with the Savior:
1. In Prayer – Young teen looking of Google Maps sees an S.O.S. written in the sand on an Island in the South Pacific. Analogy for prayer. S.O.S. means Save Our Souls. The young teen called the police who contacted the authorities who could go and rescue the man on the Island.
2. In Serving – Mark 9:41 - For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.
3. In Speaking – 1 Peter 4:11 - whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God…
An oracle is a brief utterance of God – sharing your testimony
4. In Forgiveness – The two types of forgiveness
Colossians 3:13 - bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
charizomai - to grant as a favor, i.e. gratuitously, in kindness, pardon or rescue – frankly forgive, freely grant
Matthew 26:28 – for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Aphesis = release from bondage or imprisonment; forgiveness or pardon (letting them go as if they have never been committed) remission of the penalty. Deliverance, liberty, remission.
In fact, APHIEMI, APHESIS, AND APOLUO all mean “to remove the guilt resulting from wrongdoing. When God forgives the wrongdoer, the event of wrongdoing is not undone, but the guilt resulting from such an event is pardoned.
