A New Heart for a New Year (Luke 19:1-10)

Roger Thrower, January 17, 2016
Part of the New Year Series series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

Do you need a change of heart? Three heart conditions are revealed in this passage. What kind of heart do you have?

1. An idolatrous, burdened, yet seeking heart.
* And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature.
* Matthew 6:24, Colossians 3:5
* The gospel is all about turning from idols, which are false gods, to the true and living God, Jesus Christ.
* Until the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change, you won’t change.

2. A grumbling, critical, yet deceived heart.
* And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”
* James 2:8-13, Romans 3:10
* Self-righteousness is the root of deception.

3. A loving, merciful, and reconciling heart.
*And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”
* Luke 6:35
* Undeserved kindness sets us apart to reveal the Father’s heart.
